The ATOMS Project co-sponsored an AT outcomes consensus meeting September 30, 2004 in St. Louis , Missouri.

Building on advances in recent years, what types of new assistive technology outcomes (ATO) research initiatives are needed? To address this question, the ATOMS Project spearheaded a series of activities designed to engage stakeholders and researchers in conversations to define and shape a future ATO research agenda.
On September 30, 2004 , a small invited group of ATO stakeholders and researchers engaged in a consensus meeting in St. Louis , MO. The meeting used a variety of group processes to identify important ATO research initiatives. The focus of these efforts was to build consensus about an emerging ATO research agenda.
We gratefully acknowledge the work of the Planning Committee (Carol Cohen, Frank Deruyter, Dave Edyburn, David Gray, Jeff Jutai, and Roger O. Smith) in preparing for this important event.

The ATOMS Project is planning three town hall meetings for 2003 and 2004. They will be held adjacent to popular national assistive technology conferences so that attendees are able to attend in person, while minimizing travel costs. Details are now available for the town halls being held adjacent to the ATIA 2004 and CSUN 2004 conferences. Pre-registration is required. Note: There will not be a town hall meeting held at RESNA 2004, however there will be a variety of ATOMS Project presentations throughout the RESNA 2004 conference.

Radisson Hotel, Edina RoomDescription: This session will highlight Ohio Assistive Technology Infusion Project's (ATIP) statewide effort to provide students with AT, based on assessments and according to their IEPs. We will discuss the benefits and pitfalls of launching a large-scale electronic system for collecting, awarding, and tracking grant applications, and identify data gathered to support future funding requests. An outcome tracking system was incorporated into the grant process through a collaborative effort with the ATOMS Project. We will share data regarding the relative contribution of AT toward student progress on IEP goals and the impact of AT on student participation and progress in general education.

RESNA's 26th International Conference (2003) on Technology & Disability: Research, Design, Practice, and Policy in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, June 19-23, 2003. The ATOMS Project is gearing up for a busy RESNA 2003 conference, making it a great opportunity to learn about results from the needs assessment phase, provide input on key issues, hear about plans for upcoming years, and meet with ATOMS Project staff from UW-Milwaukee and partner institutions. Description: Outcomes of assistive and rehabilitation technology intervention have primarily been measured outside of the natural environments in which recipients of services live, work and play. Clinically-based pencil and paper technologies have predominated data collections on outcomes. Personal digital assistants (PDA) and handheld personal computers (HPC) are increasingly being utilized by health care professionals and researchers. This report summarizes hardware, software, instrumentation, data management, and human factors issues and solutions related to the application of PDA/HPC real-time, natural environment self-report data collection for outcomes.

Description: This paper describes a large-scale, web-based data collection system developed collaboratively in support of the the Assistive Technology Infusion Project (ATIP) in Ohio. Data are being collected by the ATIP as a part of the application and reporting process surrounding the dissemination of assistive technology (AT) devices to individual students (K-12) throughout the state of Ohio. A major component of this system is looking at integrated methods to measure and track outcomes.

Description: This paper presents the partial results of an investigation to clarify how assistive technology (AT) is treated in current and developing health and rehabilitation outcomes assessment instruments. Review of 100 prominent instruments reveals three primary categories of how AT is treated in the scaling and methodology of current assessments. This cataloguing of outcome measures reveals the extent to which assistive technology is either ignored or considered as a covariate of function. Implications for future research needs are discussed.

Description: This paper presents the results of the second of a two part study that examined 1) the current use of outcomes measures by Federally funded investigators of assistive technology and 2) the use and perception of outcomes measures by commercial developers of AT. For part one, Federal grant principal investigators received an open-ended request for their methodologies. For part two a random sample of commercial developers received a survey. The data show that product developers appear to be indicating substantial interest in particular outcomes data.
